LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

FOR URBAN MINISTRIES

DESCRIPTION

Neighborhood churches, though spiritually inclined, often lack leadership and organizational capacity necessary to effectively address the other spiritual dimension of socioeconomic challenges and community decay manifested in unemployment, poor housing, gangs, crime, and teen pregnancy, to mention a few, in their communities.  This program is designed to provide training to bridge the gaps in the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective and efficient in church outreach ministries. In 2001 fifteen individuals from twelve organizations graduated from our training, and seventy-five attended community/organizational workshops.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of this program is to provide leaders of church-based organizations (ACCD members) with training to enhance their capacity to design, implement, and manage outreach ministries that will enhance the quality of life for the children and families in their communities.

PROGRAM GOALS

·          Provide fifty-six platform hours of comprehensive training annually in community understanding, organizational development, and outreach planning design and implementation.

·          Provide four workshops/seminars annually that will complement the comprehensive training in the areas of community, organizational and outreach development.  Example of topics have included, volunteer program development and management; managing multiple priorities and deadlines; organizational board development and training, strategic planning for ministry effectiveness, raising funds, grant writing, etc.

·          Coordinate three Think-tank meetings for ACCD members and other community stakeholders.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

There are several ways to get involved in this incredible ministry.  It costs about $2,000 to sponsor one organization through our 56 platform hours of training.  Also, about $500 is sufficient to sponsor a participant for four workshops/seminars per year.  You can also provide service-in-kind and donate various items in gifts-in-kind.

WHAT PREVIOUS GRADUATES ARE SAYING

“MTR has equipped us tremendously with tools needed to go out and empower our community. We were taught Strategic planning, Finance and Budgeting, Proposal writing, Volunteer evaluation and many more. We can now go out and network with other ministries and prepare proposals for funding. We are very grateful to Dr. Jolly for making our ministry what it is today.”

Carolyn Hall - Lighthouse Christian Fellowship

“I have found that it is very easy to serve people, but it requires more extensive tools to empower people. Much of this MTR information is being implemented in my home church, in the organizing of a new service plan and the revamping of our 70 year old mission statement.”

Debra Larry -  Testimonial Community Love Center

“MTR has provided great resources and a beginning database of network ministries. I have now been given a hands on approach of  how to plan and strategize for a viable future.”

Rev. Harrie Trotman - Exposition Park Church of the Nazarene

“MTR has helped me to be more effective in my ministry. I have been given the tools to be able to do a greater work. When I first heard of the training, I was very intimidated. I thought that I was not going to be able to keep up, and the other students were a lot smarter and better prepared than I was. But I found out that we were all basically the same. We all had a heart for God and His people. We have all been called to do his work in different fields and ministries. Our common bound was not who was smarter, but that we wanted to be the best we can for God. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate being a part of MTR.”

Rev. Alex Bernard - Teen Challenge

“Mission to Reality has been a true blessing and an answer to prayer for me. I am sure that this course will be yielding benefits and blessings far into the future. I would like to think that having had such instruction and teaching during seminary would have equipped me to be a better pastor. The reality is that much of this course’s effectiveness is that it uses the raw material of personal experience and passion that grows out of  recognized need to teach us how to move from Mission to Reality. I thank God for Dr. Jolly Beyioku and his staff.”

Rev. Albert Starr Jr. - Ascension Lutheran Church

“We have truly been blessed with a wealth of information that, without a doubt, will be the catalyst to bring the vision we have for our ministry into fruition this year. The lessons we have learned will continue to be beneficial to us, the friends we have made and bonded with, will certainly be lasting. Praised the Lord for  “Mission to Reality”

Elder Arthur and Darrell White - Testimonial Cathedral Outreach

GIFTS-IN-KIND PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

Alex_thrift_store.jpg (37549 bytes)

Sharin of Compton and Ortega of Inglewood have several things in common.  They are both low-income and live in one-bedroom apartments and are both four years old.  They live in high poverty areas within Los Angeles County where a child’s chance for achieving dreams and aspirations for a successful life are threatened by local gang violence, drugs, high incidence of school drop out, and poor health condition.  Poverty is real in the lives of many children and families in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles.  Dodging bullets and escaping the tyranny of gangs are not the only concerns in the poor neighborhoods.  Unfortunately, many families also lack adequate daily nutrition and can hardly afford simple gifts for their children during such holidays as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of this program is to provide the local churches with materials for their organizational use and to support their community outreach programs to the children and families in need.  The program is also intended to provide the means for these churches to defray their operational and program budgets.

PROGRAM GOALS

·          Procure large quantity of gift-in-kind products (e.g. office materials, equipments, furniture, building materials, men and women wears, etc.

·          Develop a monthly distribute system to channel the materials through ACCD members to needy children and families.

·          Develop adequate networking/partnership relationships for the procurement and distribution of gift-in-kind.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Janet_warehouse_2.jpg (31990 bytes)There are several ways to get involved in this incredible ministry.  It costs about $2,500 per month to generate and coordinate monthly gift-in-kind procurement and distribution to our members.  You may provide sponsorship for one or more months in a year. You may also donate various items in gifts-in-kind and/or provide service-in-kind.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

Hope in Christ is purposed to mobilize and equip local churches and communities to express God’s love while making better use of limited community resources in a holistic way to enhance the quality of life for disadvantaged people.

PROGRAM GOALS

·          Promote collaboration among local churches in the fight against poverty.

·          To leverage community and other agencies’ resources and support in the fight against poverty.

JOLLY, JR. TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program was initiated by the Board of Directors of ACCD in the memory of Jolly Beyioku, Jr. (1977-1999), the son of the founder of ACCD, Dr. Jolly A. Beyioku.  Jolly, Jr. was a very personable young man with a great desire in life. He had every excuse to go wayward but chose not to allow life’s discouragements to deny him of humility and respect for himself and others.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

Neighborhood churches, though spiritually inclined, often lack leadership and organizational capacity necessary to effectively address the other spiritual dimension of socioeconomic challenges and community decay that are manifested in unemployment, poor housing, gangs, crime, and teen pregnancy, to mention a few.

Jolly Jr.  program provides resources to enhance the capacity of ACCD member organizations by providing their leaders with some assistance to attend community and organizational trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or seminars that will build their skills and ability to design, implement, and manage outreach ministries that would enhance the quality of life for the children and families in their communities.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • To leverage existing resource fund pool.

  • To provide partial assistance to ACCD member organizations to attend community and organizational development training or workshops/seminars.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

There are several ways to assist in this incredible ministry.  It is estimated that it costs about $375 for one person to go through a comprehensive training.  Also, about $300 is sufficient to sponsor a participant for three half-day workshops or seminars per year.  One way to be involved is to sponsor one or more persons through a comprehensive training and/or workshop/seminars for a year.  Another way to get involved is to donate any amount toward the training.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

Some forms of natural and man-made disasters can now be predicted to a reasonable extent but are not preventable. Each year many lives are lost and millions of dollars in property damage done due to unexpected disasters.  This was true for many churches in the San Fernando Valley area during the Northridge earthquake.  Unprepared for such devastation, many of the churches were unable to attend to the recovery and rebuilding needs in their community.  Many of them were not sure of how to resume their daily activities and Sunday worships.

 PURPOSE STATEMENT

This program is designed to mobilize and train ACCD members and other church-based organizations in disaster preparedness to minimize the lost of lives and properties in case of disasters in their communities.

 PROGRAM GOALS

  • Develop networking/partnership relationships for training and procurement of resources in preparedness for potential disasters.

  • Provide disaster preparedness training to ACCD members and establish them as distribution centers in case of disaster.

  • Make disaster readiness manual available in print and on ACCD Website.

OTHER PROGRAMS

ACCD is constantly looking for partnership and collaboration opportunities to enhance the capacity of our members to deliver outreach ministries in a better and efficient way.   For example, ACCD currently has such relationship with organizations that provide job training and employment readiness along with job placement programs.

Another form of partnership that ACCD seeks is with local businesses and vendors.  In this case, ACCD members are provided with discounts in purchases and services for patronizing the businesses.  This opportunity is possible because we leverage our number and collective resources.

As such partnership is formed, ACCD members are informed of the opportunity and guided through the process and procedure.
